The most important tourist attraction in Sparta, linked to the history of the Byzantine Empire (it was crowned here in 1448 by the last Byzantine emperor Constantine IE Palaiologos). It is a unique set of Frankish, Byzantine and Ottoman monuments.

Mystras is divided into three main urban levels: the fortified castle at the top, the Upper Country (here are the most important monuments) and the Lower Country.

These impressive buildings (the majority of Byzantine churches, palaces, houses, bridges and the castle), a state that enjoyed great prosperity as the capital of the Byzantine despot of Moreau, enriched the East and West by trade with East and West.

Mystras is dominated by 7 important churches that were a place of learning of Byzantine architecture, painting, hagiography and spatial study of the period just before the Renaissance. Today, only Pantanassa functions as a monastery.
